Bedford School to become co-educational in 2027

Bedford School, an institution founded in 1552, has announced it will become a co-educational school starting in September 2027. This marks the first time the school will welcome girls in its 474-year history.

The decision is part of a broader investment initiative by the Harpur Trust, which manages the school. This programme includes planned improvements at Bedford Girls’ School and Bedford Modern School, as well as other Harpur Trust sites.

David Steadman, CEO of the Harpur Trust, stated that the move follows research into shifting parental expectations and the evolving education market. He noted that modern education must focus on skills like communication, teamwork, and resilience alongside academic exams. Michael Sloan, the new headmaster of Bedford School, expressed support for the transition, citing his experience in co-educational boarding environments.
