Bedrocan bankruptcy threatens medical cannabis supplies in Italy

The bankruptcy of the Dutch company Bedrocan and the projected halt of exports from the Netherlands by the end of 2026 have raised concerns regarding the continuity of medical cannabis supplies for Italian pharmacies and patients. Because Italy relies heavily on imports, the loss of this central Dutch supplier creates a significant logistical challenge.

Experts note that while other producers exist, a smooth transition will require new import authorizations to increase quantities from alternative sources. Additionally, patients currently undergoing treatment may face challenges, as switching suppliers might necessitate changes to their medical prescriptions. The issue was highlighted during a press conference organized by the Associazione Luca Coscioni, Meglio Legale, and Forum Droghe.

Separately, a conference at the University of Calabria addressed broader challenges in the Italian pharmaceutical sector, including national medicine shortages and the risks of illegal online drug sales. Representatives from AIFA and various pharmacy associations discussed strategies to manage drug unavailability and ensure therapeutic continuity for patients.
