Bedrocan declares bankruptcy, ending Netherlands' medicinal cannabis monopoly

Bedrocan International and Bedrocan Nederland have been declared bankrupt by the District Court of the Northern Netherlands. The family-owned company, operated by the Erkelens family, had been the sole supplier of medicinal cannabis to the Dutch government since 2003.

The bankruptcy follows a failed attempt to reach agreements with creditors and the Bureau Medicinale Cannabis (BMC). While the company had previously been granted a suspension of payments, negotiations for a potential restart proved unsuccessful. The company’s primary sites in Veendam and Emmeloord were central to its operations, which included producing thousands of kilos of standardized cannabis annually.

The collapse is expected to have significant consequences for approximately 7,000 patients in the Netherlands who rely on the company’s standardized products to treat conditions such as MS, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy. While Bedrocan’s branches in Canada and Denmark remain unaffected, the domestic loss of the only specialized grower poses a challenge for consistent medicinal supply. Large quantities of medicinal cannabis, valued at millions of euros, remain in storage and can only be sold with the cooperation of the BMC due to regulations under the Opium Act.
