Bedrocan seeks suspension of payments in the Netherlands

Bedrocan, a prominent Dutch medical cannabis producer, has applied for a court-supervised suspension of payments (‘surseance van betaling’) for its two Dutch entities, Bedrocan Nederland B.V. and Bedrocan International B.V. The court granted the suspension on September 24, appointing administrators from BENK Advocaten to oversee the process.

The financial instability follows the conclusion of a long-standing state contract with the Bureau Medicinale Cannabis (BMC), which has effectively held a monopoly on medical cannabis in the Netherlands since 2003. The BMC’s framework agreement with Bedrocan is set to expire on January 1, 2026, as part of a broader government strategy to unwind the state’s role in the industry and transition toward imported supplies.

A company spokesperson stated that the suspension is a ‘glimmer of hope’ intended to allow operations to continue and that current and future deliveries to patients should not be affected. While the filing impacts approximately 70 roles across production sites in Zuidwending and Emmeloord and offices in Veendam and Amsterdam, Bedrocan’s subsidiaries in Canada and Denmark remain outside of the legal proceedings.
