Bedrocan, sole Dutch medicinal cannabis supplier, declared bankrupt

Bedrocan, the sole supplier of medicinal cannabis in the Netherlands, has been declared bankrupt following a request for a moratorium on payments two weeks ago. Based in Veendam, the company has faced financial difficulties since the Ministry of Health terminated its contract earlier this year.

The cessation of the contract prevents Bedrocan from supplying the Bureau for Medicinal Cannabis (BMC), which manages the procurement and distribution of cannabis for patients with chronic pain, cancer, MS, and epilepsy. Approximately 7,000 people in the Netherlands rely on medicinal cannabis via doctor prescriptions.

Bedrocan employs about 70 people and also serves business clients in Denmark. While it is currently unclear if the company will undergo a restart or an acquisition, the Ministry of Health stated there is sufficient time to find a new supplier, as existing stocks are expected to last until mid-2027. The Dutch government is currently conducting a European tender process for a new supplier.
