Bedrock Robotics deploys autonomous excavators in US construction sites

Bedrock Robotics, a startup founded by former Waymo team members, has deployed autonomous excavators on active infrastructure projects in Nevada and Texas. The company is utilizing artificial intelligence and specialized sensors to address the construction industry's skilled labor shortage.

The autonomous machines are currently operating on real-world sites, including a water treatment plant project with Sundt Construction and earthmoving tasks for Zachry Construction Corp. The Bedrock Operator system allows traditional excavators to perceive their surroundings, plan movements, and execute tasks set by site managers.

While the technology aims to mitigate risks associated with an aging workforce and labor scarcity, industry experts note that widespread adoption depends on proving a clear return on investment for contractors. Bedrock faces competition from established heavy machinery manufacturers and other automation startups.
