Bee Safe Mosquito Control to release 600,000 mosquitoes in US

Bee Safe Mosquito Control, a company founded by Todd Montgomery, is launching a biological initiative in the United States to combat mosquito populations using 600,000 male tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus).

The method, marketed as "ZAP Males," involves releasing male mosquitoes carrying the Wolbachia bacteria. When these males mate with non-infected females, the resulting eggs do not hatch, effectively reducing the population without the use of chemical pesticides.

The initiative targets the tiger mosquito, a vector for diseases such as dengue fever, which has seen rising concerns following a locally acquired case in northern Virginia. The program aims to provide a residential alternative to traditional pesticide spraying, which some consumers avoid due to health concerns regarding potential carcinogens.
