Agricultural experts are highlighting various nutritional management strategies for beef cattle, specifically focusing on early weaning and creep feeding to optimize calf growth.

Early weaning, which can occur as early as 45 to 60 days of age, can reduce nutrient requirements for cows and lower forage demand during droughts. While these younger calves require more nutrient-dense diets—such as those containing 18% crude protein for those under 400 pounds—they often demonstrate excellent feed efficiency.

Additionally, veterinarians suggest creep feeding as a method to sustain growth as grazing quality declines toward fall. This practice involves providing calves with access to supplemental grain or high-quality forage through specialized gates that prevent adult cows from accessing the feed. The economic viability of creep feeding depends on the cost of gain, including feed costs, calf prices, and forage conditions.
