Beef + Lamb New Zealand contributes to international research on methane and nutrition
Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) has contributed to two research papers published in a special edition of the international scientific journal Animal Frontiers. The research focuses on the role of beef in sustainable food systems and nutritious diets.
One co-authored paper, titled ‘Split-gas biogenic methane accounting: policy design, transparency, and international coordination’, addresses the limitations of current greenhouse gas accounting. The authors argue that existing methods do not accurately reflect the warming impact of biogenic methane. They advocate for a ‘split-gas’ approach that distinguishes between short-lived and long-lived greenhouse gases, a method New Zealand currently utilizes domestically but which is not widely adopted internationally.
B+LNZ plans to host a side event at COP31 in Türkiye this November in collaboration with the British Meat Processors Association, Harper Adams University, and the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef to further advocate for transparent, scientifically informed climate policy. Additionally, B+LNZ’s Head of Nutrition, Julia Sekula, co-authored a paper regarding the role of beef in nutritious and sustainable diets.
