Beef market values shift as cattle harvest volumes decline

The federally inspected cattle harvest saw a significant decrease to 526,000 head last week, following a high of 542,000 head the previous week. This follows a period of increased processing volume driven by a return to packer profitability in the spot market after months of losses.

While wholesale cutout values saw a price increase over Labor Day, fed cattle prices declined slightly to an average of $218/cwt., nearly $2/cwt. lower than the prior week. Despite public perception regarding high beef costs, current cutout values are 6-7% lower than they were a year ago.

Market fundamentals suggest potential downside risk for fed cattle prices through October 1, as historical trends often indicate price weakness during this period. In the United States, cattle in the North are currently trading at a discount to those in the South, signaling ample supplies in competitive trading regions such as Iowa and Nebraska. While most beef cuts fell in value, the rib primal remains near 52-week highs.
