Beef prices remain high despite increased imports and USDA protein alternative suggestions

The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) reports that increased beef imports under President Trump have not resulted in significant savings for consumers. AFBF economist Faith Parum noted that average ground beef prices at 41 surveyed grocery stores decreased only slightly from approximately $7.29 to $7.13, despite a 25% reduction in tariffs. Parum attributed the lack of price relief to complex supply chain issues and stated that the current policy is negatively impacting ranchers, who are losing between $300 and $400 per head amid record low cattle herd sizes.

In response to rising costs, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Brooke Rollins suggested that consumers look toward protein alternatives such as chicken and eggs if beef prices remain high. While Rollins noted that beef prices have recently trended downward by 5%, she argued that prices had risen nearly 30% during the previous administration. Rollins also clarified that a recent conversation with President Trump focused on international fertilizer efforts rather than beef prices, though she acknowledged the administration discusses the cost of meat.
