Beekeepers face challenges with bee mortality and honey production

Beekeepers are facing significant challenges regarding bee colony survival and honey production. While low temperatures are often blamed for winter losses, research suggests that insufficient food supplies or improper distribution of food within the nest are more critical factors. Bees regulate their own temperature by forming a winter cluster, but errors in preparing colonies for winter can lead to starvation.

Unpredictable weather patterns, including early frosts followed by high temperatures and rapid plant blooming, have also disrupted the season. These fluctuations can trigger premature breeding in queens, leading to increased energy and food consumption that weakens the colony. Additionally, the parasitic disease Varroa destructor remains a major threat, weakening bees and making them less likely to survive the winter. Other contributing factors include the use of plant pesticides and extreme heat during the foraging season.
