Beelitz youths repurpose double-decker bus into community hub
In Beelitz, Germany, ten local youths are transforming a decommissioned double-decker bus from the Berlin transport authority (BVG) into a dedicated community meeting space. The project, which began in mid-August, allows the participants to actively design and build their own hangout spot.
The interior is being gutted to create distinct functional areas: the upper deck is intended to serve as a “chill-area,” while the lower level will be converted into a party zone featuring a bar. To foster a sense of ownership and responsibility, the teenagers are involved in the physical labor, including removing wiring and door panels.
Mayor Bernhard Knuth noted that the idea originated from direct feedback from local youth requesting more covered meeting locations. Once the interior work is complete, the bus will be moved to its permanent location near the fire station parking lot, where municipal workers will assist in creating a new entrance and landscaping the surrounding area. The final aesthetic will be customized by the youth, including the use of spray paint to replace the original yellow livery.
