Beer industry trends in Spain show rising non-alcoholic consumption and declining hop farming

A recent study by Alpha Research for Cerveceros de España reveals that 44.7% of adults in Spain consume non-alcoholic beer. The data, presented at the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) headquarters, indicates that 93.8% of these consumers drink in social settings, such as with friends or family. Common consumption occasions include appetizers (49.9%), meals (41.8%), and celebrations (32.3%). The report also supports the “Elegir SIN al volante es la caña” campaign, aimed at promoting non-alcoholic choices for those who intend to drive.

Parallel to shifting consumer habits, the industrialization of beer production is impacting traditional agriculture. In the León region, hop cultivation has seen a significant decline, dropping from nearly 2,000 hectares in the 1980s to approximately 500 hectares today. This decline occurs despite Spain becoming the second-largest beer producer in the European Union, with annual production exceeding 41 million hectoliters. Analysts suggest that large-scale industrial processes are increasingly utilizing laboratory-produced hops and purified extracts rather than natural field flowers to optimize costs.
