Beernem to transition to container-based waste collection

Beernem is transitioning from a bag-based waste collection system to a container-based system. Information sessions will be held on October 6, 12, and 13 at O. C. De Kleine Beer to address resident concerns and allow for container size selection.

This change is part of a broader shift toward the DifTar (differentiated tariff) system, scheduled for implementation on March 1, 2027. Under DifTar, residents will pay based on the amount of residual waste and organic waste (GFT) they produce, incentivizing better sorting. The move aims to meet an OVAM target of reducing residual waste to 90 kg per inhabitant by 2030, down from the current average of 126 kg. Currently, analysis shows that approximately 58% of residual waste in the region consists of recyclable materials, nearly half of which is organic waste.
