Beet juice and slow breathing shown to lower blood pressure
Nutritionists in Serbia highlight beet juice as a potent natural aid for hypertension. The vegetable’s high nitrate content is converted to nitric oxide, which relaxes and widens blood vessels. A 2019 trial found participants who drank beet juice experienced an average systolic drop of 5.2 mm Hg within 30 minutes, and a 2022 review of seven studies reported a typical reduction of around 5 mm Hg. As Alison Meklaflin, a clinical dietitian, put it, “Among the drinks studied, beet juice has the most evidence for regular consumption lowering systolic pressure.”
Harvard‑affiliated doctors also recommend a simple breathing exercise to complement diet. The method involves inhaling through the nose for four to five seconds and exhaling slowly through the mouth for six to seven seconds, practiced for five to ten minutes daily. This slow breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, easing stress, slowing heart rate and dilating vessels, which can help lower blood pressure over time. Practitioners report additional benefits such as reduced tension, better concentration and improved sleep.
