Beetroot consumption benefits athletic performance and blood pressure

Beetroot consumption, particularly in juice form, offers significant physiological benefits due to its high inorganic nitrate content, which the body converts into nitric oxide.

For physical activity, consuming beetroot juice approximately 60–90 minutes before exercise can improve endurance and muscle recovery. Studies indicate that nitric oxide helps improve blood circulation, gas exchange, and muscle contractions. Research involving female endurance athletes showed a nearly 5% increase in VO2 max after consuming 50ml of beetroot juice, while studies on experienced climbers showed modest improvements in muscle recovery.

Regarding cardiovascular health, regular consumption of beetroot juice is linked to a reduction in systolic blood pressure. The nitric oxide produced helps relax and dilate blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily. Systematic reviews suggest that consuming between 200 to 800 mg of nitrates daily can lower systolic blood pressure by an average of approximately 5 mmHg. While the effect on diastolic blood pressure appears to be significantly smaller, a single dose of beetroot juice can begin to lower systolic pressure within two to three hours.
