Beetroot consumption linked to lower blood pressure and improved physical performance
Research indicates that consuming beetroot can help regulate blood pressure and enhance physical performance. The vegetable is a high source of nitrate, which the body converts into nitric oxide to relax and dilate blood vessels.
Studies have shown that raw beetroot juice can reduce blood pressure by five points in hypertensive patients. Experts note that elderly individuals and those with obesity, diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases may experience greater benefits because their bodies naturally produce less nitric oxide.
Regarding physical activity, nitric oxide improves blood flow and oxygen delivery to muscles. A meta-analysis suggested that beetroot juice could increase muscle power by 5% and improve aerobic endurance. For optimal results, consumption is recommended at least two hours before exercise.
Additionally, preliminary studies suggest nitrates may support cerebral blood flow. Beetroot also provides folate, which helps prevent homocysteine accumulation linked to cognitive decline. Nutritionists suggest that consuming the whole vegetable may be healthier than juice alone as it preserves fiber, which helps moderate sugar absorption.
