Beetroot juice cuts blood pressure while late-night watermelon disrupts sleep

Beetroot juice, rich in nitrates that convert to nitric oxide, can lower systolic blood pressure within an hour of consumption. The juice also supplies potassium and betaine, supporting heart function and liver detoxification. Regular intake of one to two glasses per day is recommended, with optional addition of apple or lemon to improve taste.

Consuming three or more large slices of watermelon shortly before bedtime introduces close to a litre of fluid and a high glycemic load. This sudden fluid influx prompts the kidneys to work intensively, leading to frequent nighttime awakenings to use the bathroom and possible insulin spikes that can disturb sleep. A single slice (about 150 g) is suggested as a safer portion for nighttime consumption.

Both recommendations advise moderation: beetroot juice in limited daily amounts and watermelon at least three hours before sleep to avoid kidney strain, sleep interruption, and metabolic disturbances.
