Beetroot, Tomato and Pomegranate Juices Linked to Lower Blood Pressure

Research published in peer‑reviewed journals indicates that three red fruit juices can help reduce hypertension. Beetroot juice is rich in dietary nitrates, which the body converts to nitric oxide, a compound that relaxes and widens blood vessels. A 2022 review in *Frontiers in Nutrition* of seven studies found that beetroot juice lowered systolic blood pressure in people with hypertension.

Unsalted tomato juice was examined in a 2019 study in *Food Science and Nutrition*. Participants who drank about 200 ml daily for roughly a year experienced significant drops in both systolic and diastolic pressure. The study involved 94 adults with untreated high blood pressure or pre‑hypertension.

A 2017 meta‑analysis in *Pharmacological Research* evaluated eight randomised, placebo‑controlled trials of pomegranate juice (574 participants). Overall, the analysis reported reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with effects observed after as little as two weeks of regular consumption.

High blood pressure affects roughly one in three adults in the United Kingdom and Ireland, raising the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other serious conditions. Incorporating these juices alongside established lifestyle measures—such as reduced salt intake, regular exercise, quitting smoking and moderate alcohol consumption—may provide an additional, non‑pharmaceutical strategy for managing blood pressure.
