Beiersdorf CEO warns EU regulations threaten cosmetics industry
Beiersdorf CEO Vincent Warnery has warned that excessive European Union regulations could cause the European cosmetics industry to lose its global competitive edge. Warnery cautioned that the sector must avoid becoming the continent’s next struggling automotive industry due to heavy compliance burdens.
Warnery highlighted that while European products adhere to the strictest quality standards, companies are increasingly pressured to remove ingredients that pose no risk during normal use. He noted that competitors in the United States, China, and South Korea operate under significantly fewer regulatory constraints, creating an uneven playing field.
Additionally, Warnery criticized the proposed amendment to the EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, which would hold cosmetics and pharmaceutical manufacturers financially responsible for pollution. He argued that companies like Beiersdorf should not be required to make high payments when they are responsible for only a small fraction of the total pollution.
