Beijing projected to become 'super-aged' society by 2035

Beijing is projected to become a 'super-aged' society by 2035, with approximately one-third of its population expected to be aged 60 or older. As of the end of 2023, the elderly population in the Chinese capital accounted for nearly one-quarter of its total residents, totaling approximately 5.29 million people.

To address this demographic shift, Beijing has implemented several measures, including the establishment of a three-level elderly care service network spanning districts, neighborhoods, and community bases. The city has also increased basic pensions and provided significant subsidies for elderly care, with approximately 3.51 billion yuan disbursed in 2025 to support vulnerable seniors.

Nationally, China has faced a shrinking population since 2022. To combat low birth rates, the government is implementing incentive packages, with costs estimated to reach 180 billion yuan this year. Economists warn that rapid aging and a shrinking workforce could place significant pressure on pension budgets, reduce GDP growth, and impact domestic consumption.
