Beijing named UNESCO‑UIA World Capital of Architecture 2029

UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA) have designated Beijing as the UNESCO‑UIA World Capital of Architecture for 2029. The decision follows the recommendation of the Joint Committee for the World Capital of Architecture and highlights Beijing’s exceptional architectural heritage, successful urban regeneration projects and its forward‑looking vision for sustainable urban development. UNESCO Director‑General Khaled El‑Enany said the city’s historic fabric, vibrant architectural culture and resilient urban planning will inspire new international dialogue on the power of architecture. Beijing succeeds Rio de Janeiro (2020), Copenhagen and Barcelona in the three‑year programme, and the 2029 events will be organised under the theme “Back to Balance,” featuring exhibitions, conferences and public programmes aimed at promoting inclusive, sustainable, human‑centred cities.
