Beijing researchers develop biological muscle patch for regenerative medicine

Researchers at the Beijing Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine have developed a biological “muscle patch” designed to restore mobility and combat aging-related decline. Published in the journal Nature Aging, the study details a microscopic biological graft composed of approximately six million muscle stem cells mixed with a protective hydrating gel.

Once injected under the skin, these cells self-organize and create their own blood vessels to sustain themselves. The cells contract autonomously without requiring external electrical stimuli or brain impulses. Laboratory tests indicate that these continuous contractions release beneficial substances into the bloodstream, creating a systemic “gym effect.”

Potential benefits observed include increased muscle strength to counter sarcopenia, increased bone density to assist with osteoporosis, and improvements in liver function, agility, and cognitive abilities.
