Beijing's Forbidden City Crow Population Explained
Beijing is home to more than 100,000 crows, with the largest concentration around the Forbidden City. The birds are found in six main districts – the Forbidden City, Prince Gong's Mansion, Gongzhufen, Beijing Normal University, the Temple of Heaven area and the Olympic Forest Park.
Three crow species inhabit the city: the small‑billed crow, the large‑billed crow and the Daurian crow. The small‑billed crow dominates because it adapts well to urban environments, feeding on insects, seeds, waste and carrion. By day most of the flock flies tens of kilometres to the suburbs to forage, then returns to the city at dusk to roost, a pattern likened to a daily work shift.
The tradition of keeping crows in the Forbidden City dates back to the Qing dynasty, when Manchu shamanic belief regarded the bird as a sacred spirit. This cultural practice, not any supernatural omen, explains why the historic site hosts such a dense crow population today.
