Beijing's Majuqiao labor market shows signs of economic strain

In Beijing’s Majuqiao neighborhood, a large temporary labor market serves as a focal point for migrant workers seeking low-skill employment in factories, construction, and parcel sorting. Many of these workers are farmers from surrounding provinces who migrate to the city in search of better wages.

Recent observations indicate a decline in both job availability and daily earnings. One worker reported that average daily pay dropped from 270 yuan last year to between 200 and 210 yuan this year. Many job seekers face age-related barriers, as formal recruitment channels often impose strict age limits, leaving older workers to rely on the informal daily hiring market.
