Beira Baixa Line resumes rail service after storm damage repairs

Rail traffic has resumed on the Mouriscas-A to Ródão section of the Beira Baixa Line following repairs necessitated by storm damage earlier this year. The reopening follows a 3.4 million euro investment by Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) and CP — Comboios de Portugal.

The restoration work addressed damage caused by storm Kristin, specifically targeting two landslides between kilometers 39.150 and 39.270. Technical interventions included slope stabilization, railway platform reinforcement, improved drainage, and the installation of approximately 5,500 cubic meters of rockfill. Additionally, two reinforced concrete structures were built using micro-piles, and hydraulic passages and telecommunications systems were rehabilitated.

The resumption of service allows for the return of Regional and Intercity trains across the entire Beira Baixa Line, as well as freight operations. The 240-kilometer line connects Entroncamento to Guarda, passing through Abrantes, Castelo Branco, and Covilhã, serving approximately two million passengers annually. A technical visit to the site included the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Hugo Espírito Santo, and leadership from Infraestruturas de Portugal.
