Beira Baixa Line to reopen September 20 after repairs

Rail traffic on the Beira Baixa Line is scheduled to resume on September 20 following a €3.4 million investment to repair damage caused by Storm Kristin. The reopening specifically covers the section between Mouriscas-A and Vila Velha de Ródão.

Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) reported that the works were necessary due to two landslides that occurred between kilometers 39.150 and 39.270, which had suspended circulation since March. The restoration project involved stabilizing slopes using approximately 5,500 cubic meters of rockfill, constructing two reinforced concrete structures on micro-piles, and improving drainage systems.

The intervention also included the full replacement of tracks, telecommunications, and other affected infrastructure. To ensure long-term safety, IP installed geotechnical monitoring equipment to track the stability of the platform and reinforcement structures. The reopening will allow CP – Comboios de Portugal to restore Regional and Intercity services across the entire line and enable freight operators to resume operations.
