Beirut port explosion investigation nears indictment

The investigation into the 2020 Beirut port explosion has reached a critical milestone. Public Prosecutor Judge Mohammed Saab has submitted a 270-page opinion to investigative Judge Tarek Bitar, marking a significant step toward a potential indictment.

The explosion, which occurred on August 4, 2020, killed at least 235 people and injured over 7,000 following the ignition of large quantities of ammonium nitrate. The prosecution's document provides a comprehensive judicial assessment of the facts, though it is not binding on Judge Bitar, who holds the authority to decide whom to indict.

Judge Bitar has previously charged more than 70 individuals, including politicians and military officials, in connection with the disaster. Legal experts suggest this submission brings the case closer to formal indictments and subsequent trials.
