Beitbridge border truck gridlock deepens as Zimbabwe-side delays cited

Hundreds of trucks have been stranded on the N1 near Musina, creating a queue of about 20 km at the Beitbridge Port of Entry, one of Southern Africa’s busiest commercial borders. The Border Management Authority (BMA) confirmed a scheduled systems upgrade on 24 July 2026 that caused processing delays between 18:00 and 22:00, prompting the initial slowdown.

The BMA and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) later clarified that South Africa’s immigration, customs and inspection services were operating normally. They attributed the ongoing congestion to limited parking capacity, a high number of abnormal‑load vehicles, and slower cargo processing by clearing agents on the Zimbabwean side of the border. Officials said they are engaging their Zimbabwean counterparts to find measures that will speed up truck movements and relieve the backlog.
