Tubarão court sentences man to 22 years for killing partner's ex-husband

A man in Tubarão, Brazil, has been sentenced to more than 22 years in prison for the qualified homicide and threat of his partner's ex-husband. The crime occurred on June 28, 2025, in the Santo Antônio de Pádua neighborhood, after the defendant allegedly threatened his partner with a knife during an argument regarding the end of their five-year relationship.

The victim, who had been married to the woman for 18 years and lived on the same property, intervened to defend her after hearing her cries for help. Following a physical altercation, the defendant attacked the unarmed man with two knives, inflicting at least seven wounds, including a fatal blow to the lung.

The jury accepted all three aggravating factors presented by the Public Ministry of Santa Catarina, including the base motive and the use of cruel means. The defendant was also convicted of two counts of threat.
