Beja to host Portugal's national irrigation congress, highlighting Alqueva water project

Portugal’s XI National Congress of Irrigation and Drainage will be held in Beja from 30 September to 2 October. The three‑day forum, organised by the Centre Operative and Technology of Irrigation (COTR), will bring together specialists, policymakers, companies, researchers, farmers and young professionals to discuss the future of Portuguese agriculture.

The event’s theme – “Efficiency, Resilience and Intelligence in Water Resources Management” – will focus on governance, digitalisation, innovation and sustainable use of water. A major topic is the Alqueva reservoir, described as a “case of national and international success” for its ability to transform production, create jobs and promote regional cohesion. COTR president Gonçalo Morais Tristão said, “As the National Irrigation Competence Centre, COTR reinforces its commitment to a more sustainable, resilient and competitive agriculture, placing innovation at the centre of value creation for the Portuguese economy.”

The 2026 edition will also spotlight the role of youth as agents of innovation and entrepreneurship in the sector, encouraging dialogue between scientific research and on‑the‑ground practice.
