Beja's Hospital José Joaquim Fernandes Begins €2 Million Maternity Block Renovation
The new Board of Directors of the Unidade Local de Saúde do Baixo Alentejo (ULSBA) took office last week and immediately inspected the ongoing refurbishment of the maternity ward at Hospital José Joaquim Fernandes in Beja. The renovation, launched on 7 July 2025, involves a total investment of about €2 million – €1.5 million for construction work and €0.5 million for new equipment. The overhaul will create a dedicated cesarean‑section operating room and upgrade patient accommodation to provide more modern, safe and comfortable facilities for mothers, newborns and staff.
The administration highlighted its intent to act with proximity and active listening to address the demographic and geographic challenges of the Baixo Alentejo region. In 2025 the local maternity unit recorded 1,037 births, underscoring the relevance of the upgrade for the regional population.
