Bekasi and Bandung advance new waste management infrastructure
Indonesian cities Bekasi and Bandung are advancing new waste management infrastructure projects to address growing refuse levels.
In Bekasi, the city government is scheduled to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) facility on August 26, 2026. The event is expected to include a cleanliness rally attended by Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan, local civil servants, and waste community stakeholders. Mayor Tri Adhianto stated the goal is to complete the project within 18 months to manage the city's daily waste production of 1,800 tons.
Meanwhile, Bandung is targeting the completion of the Gedebage Organic and Circular Waste Processing Site (TPOS) by 2027. Mayor Muhammad Farhan announced that the facility, which will utilize new technology, aims to process up to 300 tons of waste per day. The project is a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, as well as the Danantara Investment Management Agency. The initiative serves as a temporary solution while the city awaits the completion of the Legok Nangka landfill.
