Bekasi Timur train collision: Driver named suspect in fatal crash
Police in Jakarta have named a 37-year-old train driver, identified as AN, as a suspect in the fatal collision between the Argo Bromo Anggrek and a Commuter Line near Bekasi Timur Station. The accident, which occurred on April 27, 2026, resulted in 16 deaths, primarily affecting passengers in a women-only carriage.
Investigators from Polda Metro Jaya and technical analysis from the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) indicate that the driver applied emergency brakes too late, only 263 meters before the impact. Experts noted that the train could have been stopped within 600 meters. The driver reportedly hesitated to avoid a jackknifing derailment on a curved track.
Beyond individual negligence, the KNKT identified six contributing factors, including signaling failures where the driver did not receive a yellow warning signal, and suboptimal emergency communication via standard calls rather than dedicated radio features. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has stated it is cooperating with authorities and providing legal and psychological support to the staff involved while committing to implement all safety recommendations.
