Bekasi begins construction of Rp3 trillion Waste-to-Energy facility
The Indonesian government and Danantara Indonesia have officially broken ground on a Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) facility in the Bantargebang area of Bekasi. The project represents an investment of Rp3 trillion and is designed to process approximately 500,000 tons of waste annually, covering roughly 70 percent of Bekasi's total waste output.
Managed by Danantara through PT Danantara Investment Management and PT Daya Energi Bersih Nusantara, the facility aims to transform Bantargebang from a traditional landfill into a modern environmental innovation hub. Once operational, the plant is expected to supply green electricity to 55,000 homes, reduce landfill land requirements by 90 percent, and cut carbon emissions by 640,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.
Pandu Sjahrir, Chief Investment Officer of Danantara Indonesia, noted that the project is expected to create 1,000 green jobs. While the facility can process 1,500 tons of waste per day, Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto emphasized that challenges remain, as approximately 300 tons of daily waste still require management through community collaboration and waste sorting at the source.
