Bekim Sali advocates for gradual EU integration in Dublin

Bekim Sali, North Macedonia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Affairs, addressed the informal meeting of the Council of the European Union in Dublin. During the session, which focused on enlargement, Sali emphasized that EU expansion is a geopolitical necessity and an investment in European security, stability, and competitiveness.

Sali expressed support for European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos’s vision of a more ambitious gradual integration model. This approach would allow candidate countries to participate incrementally in EU policies, programs, and parts of the Single Market prior to full membership. He noted that such a model could accelerate preparations and provide tangible benefits to citizens and businesses.

While highlighting the Stabilization and Association Agreement as a pillar of the country’s transformation, Sali identified the effective implementation of reforms as the primary challenge. He specifically pointed to the need for progress in the rule of law, the judiciary, anti-corruption efforts, and public administration. He called for coordinated support from EU member states through expert assistance, such as TAIEX and Twinning programs.
