Bekim Sejdiu presidential nomination sparks Kosovo political crisis

Kosovo is facing an institutional crisis following a political agreement between the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) to nominate Bekim Sejdiu for president. The agreement, intended to stabilize the country and avoid early elections, has met significant internal resistance within the LDK.

Six LDK deputies—Avdullah Hoti, Hykmete Bajrami, Kujtim Shala, Arben Gashi, Armend Zemaj, and Janina Ymeri—have declared they will not support Sejdiu. While some political figures, including Mimoza Kusari-Lila, suggest this opposition is directed at Prime Minister Albin Kurti rather than the candidate himself, others have accused LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku of misrepresenting the level of consensus. Lutfi Haziri, LDK Deputy Chairman, stated that Sejdiu was a candidate appearing on both the LDK and Vetëvendosje lists, and noted that Abdixhiku was aware that the candidate lacked sufficient votes within the LDK parliamentary group at the time of the announcement.

The standoff threatens the ability to reach the 80-vote threshold required to elect a president in the first two rounds of voting.
