Bekim Sejdiu withdraws presidential candidacy in Kosovo
University professor and former diplomat Bekim Sejdiu has officially withdrawn his candidacy for the presidency of Kosovo. Sejdiu cited a lack of parliamentary support and a compromised election process for the new head of state as the primary reasons for his decision.
In late August, Sejdiu was proposed as a consensus candidate by both the ruling Vetëvendosje Movement, led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, and the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (DSK). However, following negotiations intended to resolve the political crisis, members of the DSK indicated they would not vote for him.
Sejdiu stated on social media that Kosovo and its citizens require maturity and unity rather than political drama and polarization. To elect a new president, a minimum of 80 votes from the 120-member parliament is required. Since April 5, Parliament Speaker Vjosa Osmani has been serving as acting president following the expiration of the previous president's mandate.
