Belagavi police impose prohibitory orders ahead of farmers' protest

The Belagavi City Police Commissionerate has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, to manage a planned farmers' protest known as the Kendra Karyalaya Abhiyan. The orders, effective from 6 am on November 5 until 6 am on November 7, 2026, were issued due to concerns regarding public peace, traffic disruption, and law and order risks associated with large gatherings.

The restrictions apply to several jurisdictions, including the Market, Malmaruti, Shahapur, APMC, and Belagavi Rural police station limits. Prohibited activities include assemblies of more than five persons, carrying weapons, conducting unauthorized processions, using loudspeakers without permission, and making provocative speeches. Exemptions are provided for religious programs, funerals, marriage functions, and emergency services with prior permission.

Police officials reported that approximately 100 people have been detained as part of enforcement efforts. The agitation follows recent protests by sugarcane farmers in the Vijayapura district demanding a price of Rs 5,500 per tonne for their produce.
