Belarus conducts military exercises near Poland and Lithuania borders
Belarus has launched a four-day military exercise running from September 15 to 18, positioned near the borders of Poland and Lithuania. The maneuvers involve mechanized and tank battalions and are being conducted at several training grounds, including Gozha in the Grodno region, which sits directly on the Lithuanian border, as well as the Brest and Ruzhany sites near the Polish border.
The Belarusian Ministry of Defense describes the drills as “exclusively defensive,” stating they are designed to prepare units for strategic operations, including border protection, countering sabotage groups, and defending against drone and light aircraft attacks. Officials claim the scale of the exercises does not require notification under the 2011 Vienna Document.
The exercises are occurring near the Suwalki Gap, a strategic NATO corridor. Simultaneously, the Polish military is reinforcing its border with Ukraine. Polish sappers from the 4th and 18th Regiments are constructing observation posts and strengthening infrastructure using Hesco Bastion fortification systems in locations such as Dorohusk, Medyka, and Korczowa to enhance security following recent drone incidents in the region.
