Belarus launches unexpected mobilization drills amid Russian pressure

Belarus' Ministry of Defense announced unannounced mobilization drills running from June 20 to June 26, requiring all reservists to report immediately to designated assembly points. In the border city of Grodno, reservists are being summoned to verify and update personal data, with the process scheduled to conclude by July 2. This is the second such drill this year, the first having taken place in February and causing local panic.

The exercises occur against reports that Russia is pressuring Minsk to use Belarusian territory for drone strikes against Ukraine, to shift the front line westward, and to draw Ukrainian forces away from critical eastern areas. Analysts cite Belarus' financial dependence on Russia as a lever. The Kremlin publicly maintains that Belarus is not directly involved in Russian military operations, but sources say Moscow has threatened to cut off vital financial support to Lukashenko's regime.
