Belastingdienst advises monthly tax refunds for healthcare costs
The Dutch Tax Administration (Belastingdienst) is advising individuals with high out-of-pocket healthcare expenses to consider applying for a provisional assessment. This process allows taxpayers to receive monthly tax refunds or offsets rather than waiting for the annual tax return.
To qualify for deductions, certain conditions must be met. Deductible expenses may include specific dietary costs, orthodontic treatments, or physiotherapy, provided they exceed a certain threshold. However, costs already reimbursed by health insurers and the mandatory deductible (eigen risico) are not eligible for deduction.
The Belastingdienst has introduced a new checklist to help citizens identify which costs are deductible and what documentation is required, such as doctor's prescriptions, invoices, and travel expenses to medical appointments. Taxpayers are encouraged to download annual overviews from their health insurance providers to ensure accurate reporting.
