Belawan begins construction of new junior high school
Construction has begun on a new junior high school (SMP) in Belawan to address the shortage of public educational facilities in the coastal area. The project, known as Classrooms of Hope, is located on Jalan Karo and is designed to accommodate approximately 300 students.
Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas noted that Belawan currently only has one public junior high school, located in Sicanang, which is insufficient for the local population. The development is a collaborative corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative titled ‘Tumbuh Bersama,’ involving PT Belawan New Container Terminal (BNCT), PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero), and the DP World Foundation.
PT Pelabuhan Indonesia is providing approximately 5,000 square meters of land, while funding is being supplied by the DP World Foundation through PT BNCT. Once construction is complete, the facility will be handed over to the Medan City Government for management. The Mayor expressed hope that the school will eventually achieve public school status to ensure broader benefits and improved human resource quality in the region.
