Belfry Theatre presents Indigenous history through feminist lens

The Belfry Theatre will present ‘Women of the Fur Trade’ starting September 8. Written by Frances Koncan, the historical satire examines Indigenous history through a modern feminist lens, focusing on the power of women within the context of the Canadian fur trade.

The play features characters Marie-Angelique, Cecilia, and Eugenia as they interact with historical figures such as Louis Riel and Thomas Scott. The production aims to shift perspectives away from the traditional male gaze to highlight female survival and cultural inheritance.

This production also coincides with a leadership transition at the Belfry Theatre. Michael Shamata is retiring as artistic director after 18 years, with Nigel Shawn Williams stepping into the role.
