Belgian authorities arrest man for suspected semiconductor technology leak to China

Belgian authorities have arrested a 52-year-old man holding both Belgian and Chinese citizenship on suspicion of stealing trade secrets related to gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology. The suspect, a former senior employee at BelGaN—a company specializing in GaN manufacturing that filed for bankruptcy in July 2024—was apprehended at Brussels Airport in Zaventem while allegedly attempting to board a flight to Beijing.

Prosecutors allege that the suspect simultaneously served as a director for a Chinese company producing similar semiconductor devices. This Chinese firm was reportedly established shortly after he joined BelGaN and received financing from a Chinese investment fund. Investigators believe the suspect exploited his position to transfer intellectual property and trade secrets abroad.

GaN technology is considered strategically significant due to its high efficiency and ability to operate at high voltages and frequencies. Its applications include electric vehicles, aerospace, telecommunications, and defense-related radar systems. While the suspect remains in custody, authorities have identified a second suspect who has not yet been apprehended.
