Belgian brewers protest mandatory alcohol health warnings

A political and social debate has emerged in Belgium regarding proposed changes to alcohol advertising regulations. The federal government plans to tighten rules by replacing the warning ‘Alcohol abuse harms health’ with the more direct statement ‘Alcohol is harmful to health.’

Belgian brewers and industry representatives have launched a large-scale protest against the measure, arguing that the new wording demonizes alcohol consumption and ignores its role in Belgian cultural traditions. They contend that the simplified warning equates a social drink with a health crisis.

While Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke defends the measures as essential tools for informing the public, several coalition parties, including the MR, N-VA, and cd&v, have expressed opposition. Some politicians argue the state should not impose lifestyle restrictions that stigmatize social habits, while proponents maintain that the warnings simply facilitate more informed consumer choices.
