Belgian cleaning team overcomes budget cuts through efficiency

A municipal cleaning team in Belgium has successfully navigated significant budget cuts by implementing new efficiency measures. Following a mandate to reduce costs, which resulted in the non-renewal of several replacement contracts, the team responsible for maintaining urban schools developed a new workflow to maintain service quality without losing permanent staff.

A key component of this transition was the investment in centralized waste stations located in school hallways. Previously, cleaning staff had to empty individual bins in every classroom, a process identified as time-intensive and redundant. By having students and teachers use centralized stations, waste is automatically sorted, freeing up staff to focus on other essential maintenance tasks within the school environments.

Mayor Christoph D’Haese and Alderman Maarten Blommaert praised the team's flexibility and constructive approach to solving the staffing and budgetary challenges.
