The senators expressed concern over the timing of the gift, noting that it occurred just weeks before the Trump administration officially exempted European natural diamonds from Section 301 tariffs on July 24. They warned that the exchange could raise serious legal questions under U.S. federal bribery laws and create an appearance of impropriety.

The firms have been asked to respond to inquiries by August 24 regarding the ring's value, which is estimated between $25,000 and $35,000, as well as any prior discussions concerning tariffs.
