Belgian farmers face deepening crisis ahead of Libramont agricultural fair

The annual Foire de Libramont opened in Belgium with political leaders attending, but the event underscored mounting challenges for the agricultural sector. Farmers complain that market prices no longer cover production costs, while rising energy, fertilizer expenses and climate‑induced crop and livestock losses intensify financial strain.

Representatives warned that competition from imports, notably 70,000 tonnes of beef from the Mercosur bloc, has depressed domestic prices. They called for clear policy frameworks, investment plans, sanitary measures and training on water use to sustain family farms and secure the food supply.
